I wanted to inspect if time had anything to do with the wishes of the deceased and the line between research and ritual. Two years ago, I had the same thought at a museum and started drafting this poem on my phone. While walking through the museum I became very upset I did not understand why so many human bodies were on display and why they were so far away from where they died. My parents took us to the Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum in San Jose, CA. The seeds for the poem “Desecrate” were actually planted when I was 13 or 14. The collection examines being a minority in The United States and how simply living is an act of protest. “Southern Gothic (For the Black Boy)” & “Desecrate” are both from a poetry collection I am working on tentatively called, Thick With Trouble. Notes on "Southern Gothic (For the Black Boy)" and "Desecrate" "Making a measurement of such fundamental importance has required years of patient observing, enabled by state-of-the-art technology," said Richard Green, director of NSF's Division of Astronomical Sciences, which funded the research. Keck Observatory, as well as the Subaru Telescope and the NSF-supported Gemini Telescope to conduct the observations. It cannot fully explain gravity inside a black hole, and at some point we will need to move beyond Einstein's theory to a more comprehensive theory of gravity that explains what a black hole is." However, his theory is definitely showing vulnerability. "Our observations are consistent with Einstein's theory of general relativity. "Einstein's right, at least for now," said Ghez. After 24 years of observations that measured the star's precise positions and the wavelengths of its light, astronomers have shown Einstein's predictions, once again, hold up.Īn international team of astronomers co-led by UCLA professor Andrea Ghez published the results of the study in Science. The star S0-2 is a perfect test candidate, as it orbits the supermassive black hole at the heart of our Milky Way galaxy once every 16 years. Instead, astronomers turn their attention to where the action happens, such as stars orbiting black holes. More than 100 years ago, Albert Einstein predicted that light is deflected by extremely massive objects, but there is no way to test such powerful effects on Earth. I really wanted to like this book, a post-apocalyptic tale of an America where all adults are slowly killed by an infection that leaves most kids below the tweens alive. This is my favourite genre and I have read a lot of post-apocalyptic novels and I have to say, this one really hits the spot. The author has obviously spent a lot of time researching the topic and it brought authenticity to the plot. If you are interested in prepping, apocalyptic novels, or survival skills, then you will enjoy this book for more than its fictional qualities. The style of writing is uncomplicated and smooth. I found it hard to put down because just as the group went through one crisis another seemed to spring up from nowhere. The book gets us to question issues of morality as the different characters have to make terrible choices to survive. Jack is an interesting teenager with plenty of skills, but the realistic portrayal of gang warfare and crime within the setting provides us with serious conflict. This post-apocalyptic thriller is riveting from start to finish. In a world fraught with fear, hunger, and violence, only Jack, and his closest friends can find a way to thrive. When they die along with every other person over sixteen he is fully equipped to deal with the apocalyptic new world he lives in. Jack’s parents teach him practical skills, self–defence, and strategic thinking. Jack’s parents’ home schooled him, and not with the traditional lessons that every other kid learns in public school. I received this book for free in return for an honest review. Trier is famous for wine, Romans and for being Germany’s oldest city. If you’re a fan of the Peter Grant / Rivers of London series I’d love to know your thoughts in the comments.ĭespite being disappointed by this novella I am eagerly awaiting the release of book number eight, False Value, on November 19 this year! AND in other exciting news, Stolen Picture has optioned the rights to the Rivers of London series for a TV series. For the most part I still enjoyed it but I would find whole sections where I was just bored and had to put it down and go do something else for a while. While I’m completely in love with the Rivers of London books, the characters, and particularly the way they are narrated by Kobna Holdbrook-Smith in the audio versions, The October Man failed to really grab me. The Rivers of London books are fun urban fantasy stories, mostly staring Peter Grant who is a member of the magic police. The October Man by Ben Aaronovitch is a novella in the Rivers of London series. |
